Steven Palazzo
Dec 27, 2022: Clarion Ledger: Palazzo leaves Congress after 12 years. Here's a look at his time in Washington
U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo, who served six terms in Congress, will be leaving office at the end of the year and is leaving a mixed legacy for historians to review. Palazzo, 52, lost to Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell in a narrow runoff following the Republican primaries in June, in which Ezell won with 54% of the vote. Ezell went on to win the midterm election in November, defeating Democrat Johnny DuPree and Libertarian Alden Johnson Dec 23, 2022: Y'all Politics: 117th Congress heads home, sends $1.7 trillion spending package to President

Even though a record number of Americans are watching U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson lead the committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection, his Mississippi congressional colleagues do not appear to be interested in his efforts. None of Mississippi’s other five members of Congress — Sens. Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith, and Reps. Trent Kelly, Michael Guest and Steven Palazzo — responded to questions from Mississippi Today asking for their thoughts on the often bombshell testimony that has come out of the Jan. 6 committee hearings. His run-off challenger has yet to be determined as Mike Ezell had garnered 24% of the vote, just one percentage point ahead of Clay Wagner with 94% of the precincts reporting on Tuesday night. Palazzo will face off against the eventual second-place finisher in a June 28 runoff after all candidates failed to earn 50% of the vote. The field of challengers to Palazzo also included businessman Carl Boyanton and State Sen. Brice Wiggins. Candidates Raymond Brooks and Kidron Peterson also threw their hats in the ring. Others have expressed an interest in running but have yet to file their qualifying papers. One of those is Carl Boyanton who ran against Palazzo in 2020. |
![]() February 6, 2022:
Mississippi candidate Carl Boyanton states on his web site that his "top priorities are family and politics. Specific inspirations of his are President Donald J. Trump and President Ronald Reagan. " So as a supporter of coups and the party that claims coups and murder of policemen is "legitimate political discourse" it makes him an official supporter of the domestic terrorist group that officially goes by the title "Republican Party." This means, however, that both Boyanton and his competition, Steven Palazzo are both on the same page on the terrorist issue. In Hattiesburg eight years ago, then-Congressman Gene Taylor, a Democrat, stood before a crowded, cinder-brick room alongside libertarian challenger Tim Hampton and an empty podium. Taylor's Republican challenger, Palazzo, was supposed to join them for an AARP debate forum, but ditched out last minute, citing an emergency (which, it turned out, included shaking hands with voters in Eastabuchie). The 20-year incumbent forged ahead, engaging his minor party challenger—who was destined for under 1 percent of the vote—with all the gusto of a major party insurgent.
"Where's Palazzo?" USM political science professor Marija Bekafigo asked when the forum was over. "Usually, the challenger is trying to get a debate with the incumbent."
