Mar 16, 2023: WLBT: Rankin County sheriff violated public records law by withholding incident reports, judge says
On March 10, the Rankin County Chancery Judge Troy Farrell Odom ruled the sheriff’s office wrongly withheld requested incident reports by incorrectly claiming they were investigatory reports, which are exempt under the public records law.
“The public has an absolute right to know the who, what, when, and where,” Odom said during the Feb. 16 bench trial. “ … But the day that our law enforcement officers start shielding this information from the public, all the while repeating, ‘Trust us. We're from the government,’ is the day that should startle all Americans.”

“The expansion of Medicaid would offer healthcare for over 200,000 Mississippians. Those opposing the expansion would have you believe that it is a handout for the African American population. Caucasian Mississippians would also benefit. The lack of healthcare facilities in the Delta area affects those in DeSoto County as well. We simply cannot ignore the problem.”

Beth Orlansky, advocacy director for the MCJ, said HB 49 “is a prime example of what happens when we put action before due diligence.” “The bill was rushed through to approval with little thought given to how it would affect the lives of those who fall under its authority,” Orlansky said. “This puts some of the most vulnerable children in our state at even greater risk. The state simply is not ready for the realities of this bill.”

April 18, 2023: Click2Houston: Judge: Mississippi must give religious exemption on vaccines
Mississippi must join most other states in allowing religious exemptions from vaccinations that children are required to receive so they can attend school, a federal judge has ruled. U.S. District Judge Sul Ozerden handed down the decision Monday in a lawsuit filed last year by several parents who say their religious beliefs have led them to keep their children unvaccinated and out of Mississippi schools. According to the lawsuit, some of the plaintiffs are homeschooling their children, while others have family or work connections in Mississippi but live in other states that allow religious exemptions for childhood vaccinations.
