According to the Mississippi Press, local businessman and Ocean Springs School Board member, Wally Carter, has offered to pay for the fireworks show. The whole ordeal of Party Down South coming to Ocean Springs has been controversial, and there may be some symbolic fireworks at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Today (May 3, 2012) the Mississippi Senate confirmed the nomination of Wallace W. (Wally) Carter as a Commissioner on the Mississippi Gaming Commission. Carter was recently nominated to the post by Governor Phil Bryant.

Wally Carter is a businessman from Ocean Springs, Mississippi. He was born in Greenville, Mississippi in 1963, and grew up in Long Beach, Mississippi. Mr. Carter is a 1981 graduate from Long Beach High School where he lettered two years in football. He went on to graduate from Missouri Southern State University where he was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in 1986. After working for several Fortune 500 solid waste and recycling companies, Mr. Carter went out on his own in 1991 to make a difference in the solid waste industry with an emphasis on recycling rather than merely land filling of solid waste. Mr. Carter cultivated his business through hard work and dedication into the 78th largest solid waste company in the United States which he subsequently merged with Waste Pro USA, thus becoming a part owner and Corporate Senior Vice President. The combined companies service over two million customers in seven states with 2,500 employees and generating over 500 million dollars in revenue every year. Mr. Carter is a member of the University of Southern Mississippi Circle of Champions, Presidents Circle for the University of Southern Mississippi as well as a Board Member for the University of Southern Mississippi Children’s Center for Communications. Mr. Carter was the 2012 recipient of the Distinguished American Award presented by the Gulf Coast Chapter of National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Mr. Carter is a member of the Advisory Board of Directors for Hancock Bank. Mr. Carter and his family are members of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ocean Springs. He is happily married to the former Paige Bainum and has four children and one grandchild.
