"What happened in the primary was shocking to a lot of people,'' Vicki Slater, who finished second to Gray in the primary, told TODAY Friday.
Robert Gray won the Democratic nomination for Governor in Mississippi after raising and spending no money to campaign, and not even voting for himself. Gray, a truck driver with the CB handle "Silent Knight," defeated trial lawyer Vicki Slater who reported spending just shy of $200,000, and Dr. Valerie Short, an Air Force veteran with an OB-GYN practice in Ridgeland, who spent just over $40,000. Gray took 51 percent of the vote to avoid a run-off.
Truck driver Robert Gray won the Democratic nomination for Mississippi governor on Tuesday, although he reported spending no money on his campaign and said he didn't vote in the primary because he was too busy. Gray toppled Vicki Slater, a trial lawyer who was backed by many party leaders, and Dr. Valerie Adream Smartt Short, an obstetrician-gynecologist and military veteran.
Democratic candidate Vicki Slater blamed Bryant and Republican leaders for problems with education, health care, poverty, foreign goods being sold in Wal-Mart and even a lack of Mississippi-grown tomatoes in grocery stores.

The veritable non-event of this year’s races, as Democrats seem poised to not even put up a candidate approaching the same calibre as John A. Eaves(2007) and Johnny DuPree(2011). With the state’s filing deadline having passed about 3 weeks ago, the sole contenders are some dude Robert Gray and some dudettes Vicki Slater and Valerie Short. |
Three Democrats are running. Vicki Slater, 60, a Madison attorney and former president of Mississippi Association for Justice, a trial lawyers’ group, is favored over Dr. Valerie Short, an Air Force veteran, and retired firefighter Robert Gray.
