Sam Begley, 55, a well-known player in Democratic Party and political circles who is usually trying to help someone get elected, said he wants to be an "activist legislator," fighting for the city of Jackson.

Other House seats of interest include Democrat Reecy Dickson (House 42) who failed to make a run-off; and Democrats Bob Huddleston (House 30) and Karl Gibbs (House 36) both advancing to run-offs. Kathy Sykes and Sam Begley meet again in a run-off in Hinds County for the seat of Democrat Jim Evans (House 70) who withdrew after a residency challenge. Republican Joel Bomgar took 68 percent against Bruce Bartley for the seat of retiring Rita Martinson (House 58) in Madison County.

May 20, 2o15: Jackson Free Press: The Tough Work After LGBT Marriage
Sam Begley, an attorney who's running for a seat in the Mississippi House of Representatives as a Democrat, attended a presentation Hill put on for civic organization Jackson 2000, and said the state should revisit an anti-bullying bill that died in the legislative session earlier this year. Begley also said LGBT community might already be protected under the Civil Rights Act of 1964; however, federal courts have never ruled that way.
Mar 27, 2015: WAPT: State Rep. Jim Evans will not seek a 7th term
Evans' decision leaves three candidates competing in the Aug. 4 Democratic primary: Sam Begley, Tammy Cotton and Kathy Sykes.
