Columbus businessman Sam Adcock will announce Wednesday afternoon his candidacy for Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District seat in the U.S. Congress.
Sam Adcock is a sixth-generation Mississippian with experience as a Department of Navy civilian employee managing shipbuilding and repair, Legislative Director for Senator Trent Lott, defense and security policy advisor to Lott as Majority Leader, and an executive with Daimler-Benz and its subsidiary Eurocopter which became American Eurocopter and now Airbus Helicopters. In 2001, Sam led a delegation from Eurocopter to visit the Golden Triangle Regional Airport in Columbus, Mississippi. At that time, the airport was surrounded by hayfields and pine trees. But under Sam’s leadership and encouragement, Columbus - in the Golden Triangle - was chosen as the new industrial site for American Eurocopter’s operations. It was a decision that changed both Sam’s company and Columbus, Mississippi.
Within four years, international investment in the Golden Triangle exploded. A steel plant investment was secured, followed by investment for a truck engine plant by a Dutch company. Equally significant for the state of Mississippi, aerospace companies followed Eurocopter’s lead and started investing in Mississippi: General Electric located two plants in the state. Rolls Royce invested in a plant and Northrop Grumman started a UAV company in Moss Point. Aurora Aerospace located in the Golden Triangle, along with Stark Aerospace; while Orbital located a facility in Tupelo. Mississippi became one of the leading states in economic development following the successful decision to build a helicopter plant in Columbus.
Today, over 800 aircraft have been assembled, repaired or completed in the Airbus Helicopters facility in Columbus. More than 340 Lakota aircraft have been delivered to the United States Army and Army National Guard. All of those aircraft have been on schedule and below budget. Mississippi’s performance on this Army program is best in the country. For the past year and a half, Sam has led that helicopter operation, expanding its business base and positioning the facility for future growth. Also at Airbus Helicopters, Sam oversaw the company’s Hurricane Katrina response which included flying in initial emergency relief, 22 tons of relief and recovery supplies, the establishment of an emergency field hospital and the delivery of 50,000 doses of tetanus.
