May 19, 2015: Weidie Report: GOVERNOR TRENT LOTT? / MISSISSIPPI’S FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT ELECTION REVIEW
While predictions, or polls for that matter, did not mean much prior to the May 12 vote, the general consensus was Kelly and Northern District Highway Commissioner Mike Tagert were the leading candidates to make the runoff. Kelly finished 3,134 votes ahead of Tagert for second place. Lee County was the major difference. Kelly was endorsed by Nunnelee’s widow, Tori, who lives in Tupelo. Kelly’s home of Saltillo is just a few miles from Tupelo. In Lee County alone, Kelly beat Tagert by 3,711 votes. Tagert had a solid margin over Kelly in populous Desoto County but it was not enough to offset Kelly’s margin in Lee County and some of the smaller counties in the district.

The other top names being mentioned are all Republicans, with Northern District Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert among them. With his district mirroring that of Presley's, Tagert seems like an attractive candidate. He's got name recognition and has been on the ballot in much of that Congressional district.

Mike served for six years in the United States Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Millsaps College and two Master’s degrees from Mississippi State University. Mike was elected in 2011 as one of three members of the Mississippi Transportation Commission, representing the Northern District. Mike is responsible for transportation oversight in 33 counties including every county in Mississippi’s First Congressional District, representing nearly one million Mississippians. Before being elected to the Commission, Mike promoted economic development projects along one of our nation’s largest water resources, the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. He also served on the Trade and Transportation Advisory Council for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and as a Vice President of Inland Rivers, Ports, and Terminals, Inc.
