Two Democratic districts are worth noting, if for no other reason than because there simply won’t be any other high profile general election contests. Republican Robert Mitchell is challenging Democratic Senator Hob Bryan in District 7. Democratic Senator Joseph Thomas faces Republican Chastity Magyar. Magyar’s family is well connected in Yazoo County, but that district, along with District 7, are likely beyond the Republican reach.

Larry McDonald, President of the George County Board of Supervisors, said Monday's vote sets a "disturbing precedent" and "threatens to undo a very positive six-year working relationship on this project." He released the following statement on the decision:
Let me be clear, the Lake George- Drought Resiliency Project will still move forward. Obviously, we will need to retool our original plan and that work will begin immediately.
The reality is climate change is predicted to cause more frequent, more severe and longer droughts throughout the Pascagoula River Basin. Without a proactive response, these droughts will have significant, adverse environmental, ecological and economic impacts on the Pascagoula River.
According to USGS, the Pascagoula River had a drought of record in 2000 followed by other notable droughts in 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2015.
Like Jackson County, George County’s citizens know that the Pascagoula River is critical to the region’s environment, ecology and economy. I would not support any project that would threaten the Pascagoula River’s ability to continue meeting any of those important functions.
The actions taken today by the Jackson County Board of Supervisors on a narrow 3 to 2 vote threatens to undo a very positive six year working relationship on this critical regional project with George County and the Pat Harrison Waterway District.
It’s hard to understand how two new supervisors can vote to dissolve a collaboration without reaching out to our Board, the project’s engineering team, or the Pat Harrison Waterway District. Regrettably, I expect today’s action will be seen as a disturbing precedent by other community, business and economic development partners working with the Jackson County Board of Supervisors.

Dec 30, 2022: Mississippi Today: Lawmaker continues bid to remove archaic, misogynistic language from state rape, sexual battery laws
Mississippi’s rape and sexual battery laws still provide a spousal defense that can protect those who commit marital rape, and contain archaic and misogynistic language from the 1800s.
In the 2022 legislative session, Rep. Dana McLean, R-Columbus, authored a bill that would have clarified the definition and elements of rape and sexual assault, replacing passages such as “assault with the intent to forcibly ravish a female of previously chaste character.” It also would have removed the spousal defense from the books.
The bill passed the House overwhelmingly, 119-1, but died without a vote in the state Senate.

Given the circumstances of almost every Mississippi Senate seat being safe for either Republicans or Democrats, the most interesting story lines may occur in the primaries. In Senate District 1 in DeSoto County, incumbent Republican Michael McLendon has drawn as a challenger in Steve Hopkins. Hopkins is vacating his seat in the Mississippi House to challenge McLendon. Another DeSoto seat that has drawn a primary contest is Senate District 19, where incumbent Republican Kevin Blackwell has drawn a challenge from Walter Hopper.

It was about four years ago that I made a few promises at the Neshoba County Fair. I promised to maintain Mississippi’s strong credit rating, be fiscally responsible with your taxpayer dollars, modernize the state government, and be a true conservative as your State Treasurer. As I return to this year’s Neshoba County Fair, I am proud to say these were promises made – promises kept. Today, three years into serving as your State Treasurer, Mississippi’s credit rating has not only been maintained, but strengthened.

For Ryan Miller, executive director of Accelerate Mississippi, creating a plan catering to individual sector and workforce needs had to be organized to serve the community equally. “We’ve invested some workforce funding into expanding the availability of training,” says Miller. “The other thing we had to do, besides creating more programmatic availability, was to try to do a better job at letting Mississippians know about the opportunity to pursue these careers. So, we had to get geographically organized to do that.”

March 28, 2017: New York Times: Bill Minor, Journalist Who Was Called Conscience of Mississippi, Dies at 94
Bill Minor, whose courageous reporting helped open Americans’ eyes to everyday racial discrimination in the South in the 1960s and won him recognition as the “conscience of Mississippi,” died on Tuesday in Ridgeland, Miss., outside Jackson. He was 94. His death, at a hospice, was confirmed by his son Paul. May 27, 2015: Madison County Journal: PERRY/On Minor Errors
I have a lot of respect for the journalism of Bill Minor. For nearly thirty years he served as a watchdog on Mississippi government reporting news and deciphering the politics of the day with courage and wit for the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Later he was editor and publisher of the now defunct Capital Reporter. Now his writing focus is on his weekly syndicated opinion column. Bill Minor was born in Hammond, Louisiana. He grew up in Southeast Louisiana and graduated from Tulane University in 1943 with a degree in Journalism. Following World War II, the naval combat veteran joined the staff of The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. In August 1947, he was assigned as the newspaper's Mississippi correspondent in Jackson. National publications used Minor's stories from the Civil Rights era. Minor retired in 1976 when the Times-Picayune closed the Mississippi office. The veteran journalist stayed in Jackson after his retirement. He is a statewide political columnist. |
