The marquee race for lieutenant governor went to the GOP incumbent, Delbert Hosemann, as he easily fended off challenges by Sen. Chris McDaniel, R-Ellisville, and Tiffany Longino with 51.7% of the unofficial tally statewide. Antizzo says Hosemann was boosted by solid progress statewide with test scores and an improving economic indicators and the polarizing nature of McDaniel. The former U.S. Senate candidate tried to capitalize on the inability of lawmakers to come up with a way to phase out the state's income tax. "I don't think that there was anything, really, that you can get upset with Hosemann about," Antizzo said. "I know that McDaniel was really trying to stoke the anger about the fact that the income tax repeal got stalled." Hosemann racked up huge wins in suburban GOP strongholds such as Rankin (57.5% of the vote according to unofficial results) and Madison (66.6%) counties in central Mississippi. As to whether the Senate would have had enough support for an override, Hosemann said: “I don’t know that because we never took a vote on it. That was a House bill. They had to bring it out of the House. I understand today they didn’t bring it out. I suppose we’ll never know. If they’d have brought it out, I guess we’d have addressed it in the Senate and found out.”

The 51 member study group reviewing Mississippi's election laws has voted against closing party primaries citing complications with asking every voter in the state to re-register by party. Mississippi's top elections official, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, says he's happy the panel is making progress. "I think you let the process work," says Hosemann. "We didn't come with a preconceived notion, and they have narrowed the process. It'll be the open primary and tweaking what we have now, and then just a plain, completely Top-Two primary like they do in Louisiana, Washington and California."

The Board of Election Commissioners – Hosemann, Gov. Phil Bryant and Attorney General Jim Hood – approved a ballot for Nov. 4 with no discussion of Chris McDaniel's lawsuit challenging his primary loss to Cochran. The ballot includes Democrat Travis Childers, Reform Party Shawn O'Hara and Republican Cochran for Senate. A subordinate filled in for Hood at Tuesday's meeting. McDaniel's lawyers last week asked for an injunction preventing Hosemann from sending out general election ballots until McDaniel's challenge is decided. The judge declined. 8.26.14 |
