In all, 10 coast legislators were given chairman positions, including Jackson County legislators Hank Zuber, John Read, Jeff Guice and Charles Busby. Zuber was reappointed chairman of the Banking & Financial Services committee, while Busby was named chair of the Transportation committee -- two of the largest and most influential committees in the House. Additionally, Read will chair the Conservation committee, which will oversee appropriation of BP settlement money.

A Busby amendment restored the teeth of Wiggins’ bill and applied the exemption removals to all county-owned hospitals, not just Singing River. His amendment also included provisions from a bill authored by Rep. Hank Zuber of Ocean Springs, also from Jackson County. Zuber’s language included the necessary transparency regarding hospital employee pensions.

House Bill 471, passed Wednesday by a vote of 79-39, would base MAEP funding on enrollment, not average daily attendance, but with a caveat. If a school's average daily attendance drops below 95 percent, it would have to use ADA instead of enrollment. Rep. Charles Busby, R-Pascagoula, said this is an "attendance trigger."

Receiving As in the House were Reps. Manly Barton, Charles Busby, Hank Zuber, John Read and Doug McLeod. Sens. Brice Wiggins and Michael Watson also received top rankings.
