Mississippi State Senator Brice Wiggins (R-Pascagoula) is an attorney and former prosecutor who has represented District 52 for nine years since 2012. District 52 covers southern Jackson County, including Pascagoula, Gautier and Ocean Springs. He has been married for 22 years to Heather Boyd Wiggins and has two children, Landon (18) a freshman in college who recently graduated as Valedictorian at Pascagoula High School, and Grace (16) a junior at Pascagoula High School. Brice currently serves as Chairman of Judiciary A, a committee overseeing all manner of legal issues in the state and served as Chairman of Judiciary B in 2020 overseeing criminal law and criminal justice reform. As Chairman of Ports and Marine Resources as a freshman legislator, Brice authored and passed into law the Department of Marine Resources Accountability and Transparency Act in the wake of indictments of key DMR officials. He served as Chairman of the first-ever Senate Medicaid Committee in his second term. Brice is a leading advocate on education, government transparency, criminal justice reform, criminal prosecution issues, and appropriations. He authored Mississippi’s first early education initiative, the Early Learning Collaborative Act of 2013, resulting in Mississippi being recognized as Top 5 in the country. In the area of criminal prosecution, Brice authored and passed the “Lonnie Smith Act” which strengthened Mississippi’s child abuse laws and “Katie’s Law” allowing for DNA collection after violent felony arrests. He handled the 2013 Criminal Justice Reform Act which strengthened laws against violent offenders and led to criminal justice reform in Mississippi. Following the BP Oil Spill, Brice fought to ensure federal and state dollars remained on the Gulf Coast. He was a lead Senate negotiator, as well as a lead appropriator, on the law creating the Gulf Coast Restoration Fund to direct hundreds of millions of dollars to the Gulf Coast and currently serves on the Governor’s Gulf Coast Advisory Committee for RESTORE Act funds. |
