Brandon Presley
Brandon E. Presley (born July 21, 1976) is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who serves as the Commissioner for the Northern District of the Mississippi Public Service Commission. Presley served as the Mayor of Nettleton, Mississippi from 2001 to 2007. He was elected Public Service Commissioner in 2007 and re-elected in 2011. Presley announced his candidacy for Governor of Mississippi in the 2023 election on January 12, 2023.

Campaigning across Mississippi, Presley promises to deliver “a clean, transparent state government that’s on the side of the people and not just folks who can write a big, fat campaign check.” Specifically, he proposes to expand Medicaid and save rural hospitals, “ax” regressive grocery taxes, and break the grip that corporate special interests have on the state government. Those positions, and a rocking-and-rolling campaign style that has drawn more attention than usually goes to Mississippi Democrats, appear to have turned an uphill run into what polls have begun to portray as a competitive race: Presley is shown to be narrowly ahead or narrowly behind, but always in the running. And he’s just getting started. As of late summer, the candidate has touched every corner of the state on a Bible-quoting, “power to the people” crusade to build a multiracial coalition of working-class voters that could transform the politics of Mississippi, which hasn’t backed a Democrat for president since Jimmy Carter narrowly prevailed in 1976. --John Nichols; The Nation: Can Brandon Presley Shake Up Mississippi Politics? 9.7.23

“Y’all know this; this state has problems. Serious problems that require serious solutions. Hospitals are shutting down all across Mississippi, and Tate Reeves acts as if this crisis doesn’t even exist. I promise that as soon as I take the oath of office, I will expand Medicaid within the first five minutes........The system in Jackson is currently bought and paid for by the highest bidder.........A governor should work with both parties to find consensus and reach across the aisle. Politics in Mississippi need to return to the middle; that’s where the solutions are...........I may be a Democrat, but I don’t like paying $3 for gas either...........I’m more committed to tax cuts than Tate Reeves is. In Mississippi, if you buy feed for a hog, you pay zero sales tax. But if you buy formula for a baby, you pay the highest sales tax in the United States.........I don’t want to hear Tate Reeves talk about being more pro-life when you tax life at the highest rate in America.” --Democratic candidate for Governor of Mississippi, Brandon Presley, in Oxford holding a town hall at the Oxford-Lafayette Public Library 9.30.23

Prior to the hospitals departing, MHA’s PAC made a $250,000 campaign contribution to Democratic gubernatorial candidate Brandon Presley on April 27th. The next day, Magnolia Tribune obtained UMMC’s notice to MHA of its departure. UMMC did not address the donation in its notice.
The MHA PAC also committed $100,000 to Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann’s re-election bid. --Sarah Ulmer; Magnolia Tribune; More hospitals drop out of the Mississippi Hospital Association 5.21.23

Philip Gunn, Mississippi’s House speaker, has been coy about possible plans to enter the race after announcing in November that he would not seek re-election to the Legislature. Among the other Republicans whose names have been bandied about is Michael Watson, the secretary of state. But Mr. Reeves is the only Republican to have filed so far; the deadline is Feb. 1.
A Democrat hasn’t been elected governor of Mississippi in two decades, since a contest was decided by the Legislature because the winning candidate did not receive a majority of votes. Not surprisingly, few Democrats have stepped forward to run. One name to watch is Brandon Presley, a public service commissioner. Mr. Presley is a relative of Elvis Presley, who was from Tupelo, Miss., according to Mississippi Today, a nonprofit news website.

Brandon Presley is the rising star of the state Democratic Party. Most politicos consider it a question of when, not if, the Northern District public service commissioner and former mayor of Nettleton will seek higher office, and his name comes up often for governor, lieutenant governor, you name it. |
Presley laughed this off last week. He joked that such talk mainly stems from his having lost 216 pounds over the last year. But, he also admits, he has “stepped up” his fundraising, including outside his PSC district. Presley has populist appeal. He’s been a champion for consumers and their pocketbooks on the board that oversees utilities. While still lacking in name recognition outside north Mississippi, he’s made inroads, particularly in south Mississippi, where he’s earned kudos for bucking the Kemper power plant. |
